GenComm, formerly General Communications Inc., is one of Wisconsin’s largest providers of public safety systems, two-way radios, and vehicle upfitting. The family-owned and operated business is run by the Vlack family.

GenComm’s Story

The company was originally started in 1940 as a TV and radio sales and repair business. In 1968 the company migrated to two-way radio communications. GenComm has grown to three Wisconsin locations including Milwaukee, Eau Claire, and its corporate headquarters in Madison.

The staff of over 60 employees provides sales and rentals, service, installation, and repairs to customers in Wisconsin and northern Illinois.

“We’ve continued to try to raise the bar, improve the services we’re able to offer to our customers, and build a better team of employees and try to offer them not just a job but a career,” says Greg Vlack, president and CEO.

“So many of our employees have been with us 30 plus years,” adds Jenni Vlack, owner and accounting representative. That is something the company and Vlack family take pride in. As a family-owned business, Jenni points out that what they do isn’t only for her family but also for all the families working with the company.

FBC Impact

“The way we were introduced to the Family Business [Center] was through our law firm, DeWitt. We started to attend as guests and really saw the value in that,” Greg says. “The benefits are amazing.”

Greg particularly values the networking opportunities FBC enables. He sees the value in talking to other people that have gone through many of the same challenges as a business.

“Learning from other people and how they navigated some of these things — because they are very unique to family business – has been really, really been great,” Jenni adds. “I would very much recommend be part of this group. There are just a lot of different things you can’t find anywhere else.”
