The Meats Weren’t Good Enough, so Nueske Did It Himself
November 30, 2017
Nueske's has been a Family Business Center member since 2008 and we thank them for the years of family business knowledge they are able to bring to all of our programs.
Imagine waking up and frying some savory bacon strips on your stovetop. As the pan crackles and pops, your taste buds begin to water knowing that in just a few short minutes, they’ll be in bacon heaven. Now think of what it must have been like for R.C. Nueske back in 1933, who after having experienced some of the meats from the store, was left with the feeling of disappointment. Disappointed by bacon and ham? To him, this was unacceptable!
That was when R.C. Nueske, in the middle of The Great Depression no less, decided to start selling his own bacon, ham, poultry, and sausage meats using the recipes and teachings he learned from his father, Willhelm Nueske. R.C. was confident that, even though people may be going through times of hardship, his meats could bring them a small bit of joy.
Since Nueske’s was founded in 1933 and is still family owned and operated, it is sufficed to say that R.C. was correct. As the years have passed, R.C. taught his sons, Bob and Jim, how to run and maintain the company.
Today, Nueske’s has moved to its third generation of family ownership and is now run by Tanya Nueske, Bob’s daughter. While the company has expanded its product offerings and expanded its market, it has stayed true to the traditions that Wilhelm Nueske taught to R.C., and that R.C. taught to Bob and Jim. In fact, the original Nueske family smokehouse that R.C. first used still sits in front of the Nueske’s store in Wittenberg!
