The Wisconsin Family Business Center sponsors are an invaluable resource to FBC members. They are experts in the areas of finance, law, insurance, and investment, and they recognize the importance of family businesses to the health and well-being of the economy, the community, and of society in general. In the latest Meet the Sponsors feature, you’ll meet Lee Schwartz from SVA Certified Public Accountants!

Lee Schwartz,
SVA Certified Public Accountants

Tell us about your role at SVA. What do you enjoy most about it?
I head up Business Development for SVA. Monotony is not an issue for me - every day is something new and different, but my favorite part is meeting with business owners and understanding their challenges and strategic plans.

Do you have a specialty or area of focus in your role that our community would find helpful?
I (we) work with only closely-held and family-owned businesses in addition to nonprofit organizations.

How long have you been a part of the Wisconsin Family Business Center?
This is SVA's third year as a sponsor and I've been involved since the start.

Please tell us about your time as a sponsor of the Wisconsin Family Business Center. What have you enjoyed most? What value have you received from being a part of the FBC community?
I've enjoyed connecting personally with the members and our fellow sponsors.

What the biggest challenge you see family businesses face?
Consolidation/maintaining our independence. We see the same thing in our industry and our shareholders constantly plan ahead to ensure we can be a 100-year firm (currently in year 47).

What are your all-time favorite books?
Winds of War and War and Remembrance by Herman Wouk

What professional accomplishment are you most proud of?
In a past life, I led the process to place a value on and sell Grand Central Station and related air rights in Manhattan.

What do you want business owners and family business leaders to know about your industry?
Accountants are often thought to be dull but SVA has an energetic and fun group of people.

Please tell us about yourself, your education, and background.
I grew up in Cleveland, Ohio, graduated from Indiana University (go Hoosiers!), met my wife in Chicago, and moved to Madison in 2008. I guess I'm a true Midwesterner. My wife and I have two kids (Maya and Zach) and enjoy camping, hiking, and skiing.
