State Collection Service’s Story 

State Collection Service was founded in 1949 by Hilding Haag. The family-owned business is now run by his son Tom, and grandson Tim. State is a national leader in healthcare receivables. The company assists healthcare providers with call centers that handle patient balances, bad debt placement, insurance follow up, and pre-service financial clearance. 

“There’s something special knowing your grandfather started it, your father was part of it and still is a part of it, and now myself,” says President Tim Haag. “You’re walking in the door each day with your name on the door, and that means a lot.” 

State uses a combined approach of human interaction and artificial intelligence. Knowledgeable representatives engage with patients who need or prefer to manage their account with another human while leading technology helps ensure convenient self-service. 

State has over 700 employees and works with more than 400 healthcare providers nationwide. 

FBC Impact 

“I tell people all the time about this [FBC] program. Hearing stories – both success stories and some failures – learning from those has been great,” Haag says. 

He loves that FBC programming covers topics that resonate with not only him but other members of his company as well. He appreciates the ability to get other employees in HR, accounting, and more involved in the educational offerings.

“I’ve also taken part in the peer groups. I was in one that supported future generations coming into a leadership role. Throughout the three or four years I was a part of that group there was a rotation of about eight to 10 different individuals that I still talk to today. Very beneficial,” Haag says.
